INSIGHTS AND SUGGESTION

Becoming part of SEA-TEACH program is a big break for me. It is a big opportunity for me to be a better teacher. It is a chance for me to mold myself not just to be exposed with what my country has but also to see what others have. One of the reason why I joined the program is,

  1. for me to see the other side of educational system. It is important for me as a future teacher to know what others have that I can also apply for my teaching in future;

  2. to see other culture and be enlighten what other perspectives;

  3. Another reason is to develop my skill such as communication skill and social skill and lastly,

  4. to be exposed in my future profession. SEA-TEACH has become a big part of my journey becoming a teacher. And as a teacher-would-be, it is important for me to meet my purpose for me to be a wholesome teacher.

In my month stay in Padang, Indonesia I could say that my expectations were met. I knowledge about other beliefs, culture and tradition become broader. I had able to see the other side of the world.

Throughout my practicum from deployment, assignment of teachers, observations, teaching up, mentoring to feed backing it was satisfactory. During my first teaching I had a hard time communicating with my students because of the language, but due to their politeness I can understand what they are saying. My pupils had already been close to my heart, stay in SD Pembangunan I can say that my students in Grade 4 has already been part of my life. I will never forget the days of my teaching were all my students are attentive and willingly to learn. I know sometimes they do not understand my language but even though, still they listen and look at me. Maybe we cannot understand each other by talking but at least through our hearts we communicate. To all the teachers and staff of SD Pembangunan, they help me a lot throughout my practicum. Their kindness and willingness to help is very well appreciated by me. Whenever I enter to the teachers’ office they will all ask me “Makan!” (let’s eat). It is true that when the environment is full of love and happiness no negativity will ponder. Teachers in SD Pembangunan are all kind that all I build there was to become a good and better teacher in the future, because I want to adapt the values they have.

After my teaching and observation, I was satisfied and overwhelmed by the positive feedback that my cooperating teacher told me. It was such a great experience that I had able to teach in SD Pembangunan and I had able to meet the teachers and students whom I already consider a family to me. I could say that my expectation met. Teaching in different country with different is really difficult, but through that I had able to learn other language which is Bahasa. Language has never been a barrier when I teach, I can confidently say that my students learn from me. Based on their performance and assessment I know they learn what I thought. Through SEA TEACH I had able to mold myself in becoming a teacher. It has proven in there that a teacher must be flexible which I did. Me as their teacher, I had to double time and learn what I have to learn so that can understand each other. It was a long and amazing journey of me being a practicum of SD Pembangunan Laboratorium, UNP. From values to how they teach I will apply all those that I’ve learnt from them in the future when I become a teacher. Indeed, language had never been a barrier in teaching and learning process.

Challenges and difficulties make me a better person. It is an implication for me to do more and to always do the best. The following are the challenges that I had experienced all throughout my Practicum period:

  1. The language barrier

  • Language barrier is never a problem but a challenge for me. My cooperating teacher cannot speak English so we had difficulty in communicating with each other. Also, with my students where I am assigned, 99% of my students cannot communicate in English.

First of all, I am so happy that during my stay in SD Pembangunan Laboratorium I had to be able to make friends with the teachers and the other Indonesian practicums. Everyone in the school are accommodating and kind. In terms of accommodation I have no problem since everyone are so kind and approachable. Even the students of the school are so polite and thoughtful. Students are respectful. I had enjoyed my stay in SD Pembangunan Laboratorium, UNP. Other from the fact that I learnt how teachers teach, but I also made friends and built a beautiful family of SD Pembangunan Laboratorium.

The following are my personal suggestion for future improvement:

  1. The cooperating teacher where the intern will be assigned must speak in English to have a better communication and critical feed backing in terms of teaching.

  2. At least 50% of the class, where the intern will be assigned can speak English to attain 99% effective teaching-learning process.
